The Design Team

What makes the Design Center unique are the combined talents, skills, and experiences of our staff. Each of us brings to the Design Center, and your project, individual creativity and enthusiasm.

Creative Services Director

Carolyn O'Connor brings 20 years of experience in the creative industry and a proven track record of managing programs that achieve bottom-line business results while meeting the needs of the customer.

Deputy Director

Chris Lozos brings a combination of analytical problem solving skills honed from 45 years of design, corporate identity, printing, design education, typography, and visual communication management experience to the Center.

Production Manager

Tom Witham is production manager for graphic design team. Tom comes from a broad background in photography and publishing. Prior to joining us in USDA, he has held positions in the Defense and Health and Human Services Departments.

Project Managers

George Avalos is a graphic and exhibit designer whose skills are applied to projects ranging from posters to books to exhibit graphics. His expertise lies is in conceptualizing visuals and then following through to product completion. He also does great caricatures.

Heather Curlett is our campaigns and new media team leader as well as graphic and exhibit designer. Heather specializes in web site design and management but is equally skilled in the design of exhibit and print media.

Arabella Juarez is a graphic and exhibit designer. Arabella designs for print, electronic publishing, and has expertise in design of large-format graphics for exhibits.

Woody Machalek brings a mix of print, web, and exhibit design skills and stirs in a pinch of humor with his conversation so you sometimes have to take what he says with a grain of salt.

Jeff Baldwin is an exhibit fabrication specialist. Jeff is highly skilled in the fabrication of casework and exhibits. He provides technical advice on fabrication and is skilled in graphic applications for exhibits.

Resource Representatives

Joslyn Marshall is our resource manager. Joslyn handles administrative contracting matters, budget activity reports for the center, and maintains project accounts and payments.

Cindy Haydon is our administrative specialist. Cindy provides administrative support to the director of the Design Center, coordinates shipping for traveling exhibits, and assists in contract payments.

Tom Sims is warehouse manager. Tom manages and monitors the departments inventory of traveling exhibits. He receives and inspects exhibits between showings and often directs exhibit installations locally.

Steve Hawkins assists the warehouse manager with maintaining inventory and shipping preparation of traveling exhibits.
