River to Coast Children’s Services

Rural Development is helping River to Coast Children’s Services with a $21,292 Community Facilities grant. This project will help purchase a new computer server and software for the River to Coast Children’s Services administration office located in Guerneville.

The nonprofit provides subsidized childcare in 30 childcare homes and 10 preschools in western Sonoma County. Currently, the staff completes their reports by hand, or using excel, however, the State of California and other agencies that provide the majority of their funding are requiring more sophisticated reports. The new computer equipment and software will allow staff to produce the required reports, as well as upgrade their accounting and childcare provider database software, thereby greatly improving their efficiency and meeting the needs of their funding agencies. River to Coast is leveraging the grant with $39,543 in other funds.

Surprise Valley Joint Unified School District

Rural Development will help Surprise Valley Joint Unified School District with a $50,000 Community Facilities grant. This project will move three modular units from Cedarville Elementary School to an adjacent lot to be used for a new child care center. In addition to moving the units, the project will also purchase computers and playground and classroom equipment.

The Cedarville area does not currently have licensed child care facilities which is a barrier for people to relocate to the region. The new child care center will be a state licensed facility and will provide care for 24 infants, toddlers and preschoolers.

Strathmore Elementary Unified School District

Rural Development is helping Strathmore Elementary Unified School District with a $50,000 Community Facilities grant. This project will purchase a 960 square foot modular building and related equipment to expand the pre-school center. This new building will be located adjacent to the current pre-school building and will allow the school to double their capacity from serving 42 children to 84. Operation costs are funded through the California Department of Education. Strathmore is a rural community of 2,500 with a median household income of $25,156.
