Construction Project and Lane Closures on Independence Avenue

Independence Avenue Roadway Construction Project

Beginning Monday, May 1, the National Park Service (NPS) will switch lane closures on westbound and eastbound Independence Avenue between 14th Street and 17th Street. During rush hours, lane closures will be limited to the right lane only. During non-rush hours, up to two lanes may be closed.

These lane closures are part of the NPS repaving and storm drain re-construction project on Independence Avenue in this area.   Construction includes grading, drainage work, roadway paving, curb and sidewalk replacement.  Motorists will be notified through the use of variable message boards (with specific and current information) and construction signs. 

The planned completion date for all work is fall 2006.   Weather delays may require adjustments to the schedule.  The NPS will continue to inform the public and the media of any adjustments in the work schedule.  Every effort is being made to minimize traffic delays and accomplish the work in a timely manner.
