POSITION TITLE:                Student Trainee (Meat Grading)

MAJOR DUTIES:  Performs various duties to gain knowledge and experience related to the evaluation of meat products to obtain the necessary on-the-job training for an Agricultural Commodity Grader (Meat) position.  Duties are performed under the direct supervision of experienced Meat Graders and Supervisors.  Utilize acquired knowledge to apply rules, regulations, instructions, policies, and procedures governing the grading and certification of meats, prepared meats, and meat products.

POSITION TITLE:  Animal Health Technician

DUTY LOCATION: Columbia, SC

 

MAJOR DUTIES:  Performs duties in connection with major animal disease control and/or eradication programs such as brucellosis eradication, tuberculosis eradication, BSE surveillance eradication, poultry disease control and eradication, tick eradication, or screwworm eradication.  Typical duties include but no limited to assisting with BSE sample collection, testing of livestock for various animal disease monitoring/surveillance programs.  Visiting farms, garbage feeders and others for the purpose of inspecting livestock to detect abnormal conditions which may indicate the presence of disease.  The incumbent works under the direct supervision of a Veterinarian or a higher grade technician, who makes assignments, provides instruction and training as required and specifies procedures to be followed.

MAJOR DUTIES:  The incumbent analyzes data collected through national surveys of disease prevalence, production practices, etc., of specific food animals, e.g., dairy, swine, beef cow/calf.  Assists veterinarians and epidemiologists in developing fact sheets with results of surveys and disease studies.  The incumbent conducts extensive literature searches on various animal disease agents and writes reports summarizing findings.  Assists veterinarians, epidemiologists, and economists in developing risk assessments dealing with livestock and livestock product import activities.
