Environmental Management Systems
Background

USDA is committed to environmental compliance and sustainability by developing and implementing environmental management systems (EMS). Such systems incorporate the environmental impacts of USDA activities into day-to-day decision-making and long-term planning processes, across all Departmental and agency missions, activities, and functions. EMS represents the main management framework for achieving the sustainable practices goals of Executive Order 13423, "Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management."

Responsibilities Include Supporting USDA Agencies in Their Efforts to:

  • Develop and implement EMS at appropriate organizational levels throughout USDA.
  • Incorporate the sustainable practices goals of E.O. 13423 into USDA EMS
  • Implement environmental compliance plans as an integral part of EMS
  • Implement environmental compliance review and audit programs that identify compliance needs and possible root causes of non-compliance
  • Reduce the release and use of toxic and hazardous chemicals and materials, including toxic chemicals, hazardous substances, ozone-depleting substances, and other pollutants that may result in significant harm to human health or the environment.
