The Department of Agriculture owns and accounts for over 387,000 pieces of personal property worth a total acquisition value of over $3.1 Billion. USDA owns and operates the largest civilian cache of artillery and weapons.  We own 6,800 howitzers, recoilless rifles, and other weapons. Along with  safety enforcement on public lands, the howitzers are used by the Forest Service in avalanche control, resulting in the saving of many lives each year. USDA has more property on loan to non-Federal recipients than any other Federal agency.  Approximately $1.3 Billion is on loan by the Forest Service to State Foresters for rural fire fighting and protection.  Another $174 Million is on loan to Land Grant Institutions for agricultural research and extension service service programs. USDA owns and uses over 1,500 horses and mules, 6 llamas, and our world famous Beagle Brigade.
