  Statements by the Secretary
Comments on eGovernment from Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman

"Technology has helped provide American farmers and ranchers a competitive edge. Two months ago I announced that eGovernment will be a major focus for USDA this year. The computer and the Internet are changing our lives in many ways, and the eGov initiatives will help unleash their full potential for farmers and ranchers.

"[eGovernment] also supports the President's Management Agenda, which is improving the operation of the federal government with an emphasis of results. We began an initial redesign of the USDA Web site to focus more on our customers. The "customer statement" is the first of many new features that we will offer to better connect farmers and ranchers with USDA services and programs."

"USDA's eGovernment... initiatives are an important part of the President's Management Agenda to improve the operations of government. And they will be an area of special focus for USDA this year.
Our goal is to use technology so that this Department of roughly 110,000 employees runs much more efficiently and is more responsive to the needs of American agriculture."
