The World Summit on Sustainable Development is being convened in
Johannesburg, South Africa, 10 years after the historic United Nations
Conference on Environment and Development, the "Earth Summit," held in Rio de
Janiero in 1992. The meeting takes place from August 26 to September 4, 2002.
The Summit is expected to be the largest United Nations gathering
ever.
