Hal Salwasser was selected as the regional forester for the Forest Service's Northern Region, based in Missoula, Mont. He succeeded Dave Jolly, who served in that position from Dec. 1991 until March 1995, when he retired following more than 34 years of service with the Forest Service.

From Oct. 1992 until his selection Salwasser was the Boone and Crockett Professor of Wildlife Conservation at the University of Montana in Missoula. From 1990-92 he was head of the Forest Service's New Perspectives Program, headquartered in Washington, DC, after having served as the agency's deputy national director of wildlife and fisheries from 1986-90.

As the national wildlife ecologist, Salwasser developed and coordinated the Forest Service's Wildlife and Fish Habitat Relationships Program, based in Fort Collins, Colo., from 1982-85. He began his career with the Forest Service in 1978 as the regional wildlife ecologist for the agency's Pacific Southwest Region, based in San Francisco.

A native of Fresno, Calif., Salwasser holds a B.A. degree in biology from California State University in Fresno and a Ph.D. degree in wildland resource science from the University of California at Berkeley.¤
