Jan van Schilfgaarde was selected as area director of the Agricultural Research Service's Pacific West Area, based in Albany, Calif. He succeeded Bob Reginato, who served in that position from March 1991 until January 1996 and is now the associate administrator of ARS. [Then] Associate Area Director Phyllis Johnson served as acting area director in the interim.

From November 1991 until his recent selection, van Schilfgaarde served as the associate deputy administrator for natural resources and systems for ARS in Beltsville, Md. He was associate area director of the agency's Northern Plains Area, based in Fort Collins, Colo., from 1987-91, after having served as area director of ARS's [then] Mountain States Area in Fort Collins from 1984-87. From 1972-84 he was director of the agency's U.S. Salinity Laboratory in Riverside, Calif.

Van Schilfgaarde served as director of the [then] Soil and Water Conservation Research Division for ARS in Beltsville from 1971-72, after having been associate director of the Division from 1967-71 and chief water management engineer in the Division from 1964-67. He taught agricultural engineering as an assistant professor, associate professor, and then a professor at North Carolina State University--while also working as a drainage engineer for ARS's Soil and Water Conservation Research Division--from 1954-64.

A native of The Hague, the Netherlands, van Schilfgaarde holds a B.S. degree and an M.S. degree, both in agricultural engineering, as well as a Ph.D. degree in agricultural engineering and soil physics, all from Iowa State University. ¤
