Shirley Watkins was sworn in as under secretary for food, nutrition, and consumer services. She succeeded Ellen Haas, who held that position from May 1993 until she resigned in Feb. 1997 and is now working as an adjunct fellow in nutrition policy at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, writing a book on food and health, and doing consulting work in the private sector. Mary Ann Keeffe, deputy under secretary for food, nutrition, and consumer services, served as acting under secretary in the interim.

From Sept. 1995 until her recent appointment, Watkins served as deputy assistant secretary for marketing and regulatory programs. She was deputy under secretary for food, nutrition, and consumer services from 1994-95. The March-April 1994 issue of the USDA News carried her complete biographical sketch, following her selection to that position. ¤
