Danny Sells was selected as associate chief of the Natural Resources Conservation Service. He succeeded Pearlie Reed, who served in that position from 1994 until March 1998, when he became chief of NRCS.
Sells joined NRCS in 1993 as special assistant to the chief and, since 1994, also served as director of legislative affairs for the agency. While serving in those two positions, he helped guide the 1993 reorganization of NRCS. He also provided guidance for the development of the conservation provisions of the 1996 Farm Bill.
Sells has more than 20 years of experience, since 1975, as an Angus cattle and horse breeder on his farm in Gray, Tenn., which his family still operates. From 1985-93 he served as a regional field director and agricultural advisor--based in the senatorial office in Bluntville, Tenn., covering the eastern part of Tennessee--to [then] U.S. Sen. Al Gore (D-Tenn.).
Sells served as an associate board member and district supervisor for the Washington County, Tenn., Soil Conservation District from 1978-93. He was a director of the Tennessee Association of Conservation Districts from 1988-93.
A native of Gray, Tenn., where he grew up on his family farm, Sells holds a B.A. degree in political science from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. ¤
