Rajen Anand was appointed as executive director of USDA's Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. He succeeded Eileen Kennedy, who held that position from 1994 until November 1997 when she was named as acting deputy under secretary for research, education, and economics--and was ultimately appointed deputy under secretary for research, education, and economics in March 1998.
From January 1995 until his recent appointment, Anand served as deputy executive director of CNPP. Before joining USDA, for 25 years he was a professor at California State University at Long Beach, where since 1970 he taught physiology, pathophysiology, and metabolism. In addition, he served as the founding chair of its Department of Anatomy & Physiology from 1985-89. He also served as chair of its Department of Communicative Disorders from 1990-92.
Since 1994 Anand has been a member of the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation. He has published more than 35 scientific research articles. He is also a freelance journalist and has written over 350 news stories and articles for various newspapers and magazines.
A long-time resident of Westminster, Calif., Anand holds a B.S. degree
in biology from Meerut University in Meerut, India, as well as a Ph.D.
degree in human physiology, nutrition, and biochemistry, and a doctorate
of veterinary medicine, both from the University of California
at Davis. ¤
