Eileen Kennedy was named as deputy under secretary for research, education, and economics. She succeeded Catherine Woteki, who held that position from January 1996 until August 1997, when she was sworn in as USDA's first under secretary for food safety.
From November 1997 until her recent appointment, Kennedy was acting deputy under secretary for research, education, and economics. She served as the first executive director of USDA's Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion from 1994-97. From 1992-94 she was a visiting professor in domestic and international nutrition at the School of Nutrition at Tufts University in Medford, Mass.
From 1981-94 Kennedy worked for the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington, DC, starting as a nutrition policy consultant, then as a research fellow, and finally as a senior research fellow. She served as the chief of the Nutrition Policy Branch in the Office of Policy, Planning, and Evaluation with the Food and Nutrition Service from 1979-81.
Since 1996 Kennedy has served as a member of both the United Nations Advisory Group on Nutrition and the Institute of Medicine's Board on International Health. She has authored over 80 publications related to the subject of nutrition.
A native of New York City, Kennedy holds a B.A. degree in biology from Hunter College in New York City, an M.S. degree in foods and nutrition from Pennsylvania State University, an M.S. degree in nutrition from Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., and a doctor of science degree in nutrition, also from Harvard University. ¤
