H. Hernandez

Humberto Hernandez was selected as the regional conservationist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service's East Region, based in Beltsville, Md. He succeeded Diane Gelburd, who served in that position from November 1995 until April 1998, and who is now the director of NRCS's Ecological Sciences Division.

From September 1996 until his recent selection, Hernandez served as director of NRCS's [then] Community Assistance and Rural Development Division. He was the agency's senior partnership policy and program coordinator from 1995-96. He served as NRCS's state conservationist for Arizona, based in Phoenix, from 1993- 95. From 1988-93 he was the director of NRCS's Caribbean Area, based in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico.

Hernandez worked as an NRCS area conservationist in Escondido, Calif. from 1987-88. From 1983-87 he was a district conservationist in Fort Worth, Texas, after having worked as an area range conservationist in Pampa, Texas from 1981-83. During that time, he served on a special assignment as a watershed management specialist in Tegucigalpa, Honduras during 1983. From 1979-81 he was a district conservationist in Miami, Texas, after having worked as a range conservationist in Jayton, Texas from 1978-79. He began his career with NRCS as a range conservationist in Carrizo Springs, Texas in 1976.

A native of Harlingen, Texas, Hernandez holds a B.S. degree in range and wildlife management from Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
