Larry Mitchell was named as the deputy administrator for farm
programs in the Farm Service Agency. He succeeded Richard Newman, who
held that position from June 1995 until he retired in December 1998, following
over 38 years with the agency.
From January 1999 until his recent appointment, Mitchell served as acting deputy administrator for farm programs in FSA. He was director of FSA's Legislative Liaison and Public Affairs Staff from August 1997 to January 1999. From 1994-97 he served as vice president of government relations for the National Farmers Union, based in Washington, DC. He was director of federal and state relations for the Washington, DC-based American Agriculture Movement, and also worked as editor of the American Agriculture Movement Reporter, from 1989-93.
Mitchell also worked as an independent consultant and writer on American farm issues from 1985-97. From 1972-88 he was a farmer on his cotton, corn, wheat, and oats family farm in Webb, Texas.
A native of Webb, Texas, Mitchell holds a B.S. degree in plant and soil science from Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas.
