Jim Furnish was selected as the deputy chief of the national forest system in the Forest Service. He succeeded Bob Joslin, who served in that position from May 1997 until he retired in December 1998 and moved to Lander, Wyo., following over 36 years of service with the Forest Service.
From April 1994 until his recent selection, Furnish was forest supervisor of the Siuslaw National Forest, based in Corvallis, Ore. He served as deputy forest supervisor at that location from 1991-93. From 1989-91 he worked as a forest plan appeals coordinator at the Forest Services headquarters office in Washington, DC. He was the planning and environmental staff officer on the San Juan National Forest, based in Durango, Colo., from 1984-89.
Furnish worked as a district ranger, based in Worland, Wyo., on the Bighorn National Forest, from 1977-84, after having worked as a timber management and forest planner, based in three towns in South Dakota, on the Black Hills National Forest from 1971-76. He began his career with the agency in 1968, based in Orono, Maine, as a forester with the Northeastern Research Station.
A native of Iowa City, Iowa, Furnish holds a B.S. degree in forest management from Iowa State University.
