A Solomon

Andrew Solomon was named USDA’s press secretary and director of public affairs in the Office of Communications. He succeeded Tom Amontree, who was both director of OC and USDA’s press secretary from October 1996 until October 1999, when he became vice president for strategic communications with the American Trucking Associations, based in Alexandria, Va.

From December 1997 until his appointment in October 1999 Solomon served as a USDA deputy press secretary, speaking on-the-record for Secretary Dan Glickman and the Department on food safety, marketing, regulatory, research, and budget issues. During 1997 he worked as a consultant to several newspapers, seeking to improve their coverage of local issues and their connection to readers. He served as deputy press secretary at the Democratic National Committee from 1995-97.

During 1994 Solomon worked in the management office for the city of Boston to help make city services more efficient and effective. From 1991-93 he was chief of staff to Massachusetts State Senator Stan Rosenberg, after having worked as a legislative/press aide from 1989-91 to Massachusetts State Senator Sal Albano.

A native of Newton, Mass., Solomon holds a B.A. degree, majoring in psychology, from Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., and a master of public policy degree from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.
