S Verble

Sedelta Verble was appointed director of the Office of Communications. She succeeded Tom Amontree, who was both director of OC and USDA’s press secretary from October 1996 until October 1999, when he became vice president for strategic communications with the American Trucking Associations, based in Alexandria, Va.

From October 1996 until her appointment in October 1999 Verble served as OC’s deputy director. She was director of OC’s Office of Public and Media Outreach from 1994-96. During that period she served as co-editor of “Recovery Times,” a joint publication between USDA and the Federal Emergency Management Agency aimed at helping victims of the “Great Flood of '93" in the Midwest.

Verble has longtime communications and agricultural experience. She worked for Texas newspapers and was recognized for her reporting skills by Texas Press Women. Her career includes seven years with [then] Texas Agriculture Commissioner Jim Hightower. She also held leadership positions in a number of organizations supporting the interests of women and American Indians. She also worked in the Middle East.

A native of Burkburnett, Texas, Verble holds a bachelor of journalism degree from the University of Texas at Austin School of Communications.
