J Zirschky

John Zirschky was appointed as the associate administrator of the Risk Management Agency. He succeeded Suzette Dittrich, who held that position from October 1994 until May 1998, and is now special assistant to Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs Mike Dunn.

Before joining USDA, from February 1994 until his appointment Zirschky served at the Pentagon as the acting assistant secretary of the army for civil works. During that time he increased environmental programs of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and obtained the authority to expand Arlington National Cemetery.

From 1993-94 Zirschky worked as a professional staff member on the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, where he concentrated on such issues as clean air and water and nuclear regulation. He worked from 1990-93 as a legislative assistant to U.S. Sen. James Jeffords (R-Vt.), where he concentrated on environmental and natural resource issues. He worked as an engineering consultant, based first in Kansas City, Kan., from 1980-82, and then in Atlanta from 1984-90, where he focused on such initiatives as designing treatment facilities for food processing, for major U.S. food corporations across the country.

A native of Fullerton, Calif., Zirschky holds a B.S. degree in civil engineering from the University of Tennessee, an M.S. degree in engineering from Utah State University, and a Ph.D. degree in engineering from Clemson University in Clemson, S.C.
