Ric Dunkle was selected as the deputy administrator for plant protection and quarantine in the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. He succeeded Al Elder, who served in that position from December 1997 until April 1999 when he became the director of APHIS’s Plant Protection and Quarantine Eastern Region, based in Raleigh, N.C.

From September 1992 until his selection Dunkle served as the director of the Midwest Area, based in Peoria, Ill., for the Agricultural Research Service. The August-September 1993 issue of the USDA News carried his complete biographical sketch, following his selection to that position.
