Cindy SmithCindy Smith is the deputy administrator for biotechnology regulatory services in the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

From June 2002 until her selection to this position Smith served as acting deputy administrator for biotechnology services in APHIS. She was associate deputy administrator for wildlife services with the agency from 2001-2002, after having been assistant deputy administrator for wildlife services from 1993-2001.

From 1987-93 Smith worked in APHIS’s [then] Biotechnology, Biologics, and Environmental Protection Program, starting as a technical information specialist and ultimately becoming its chief of management planning and technical assistance. She began her career with APHIS as a clerk at its headquarters office in 1979.

The position of APHIS deputy administrator for biotechnology regulatory services is a newly created position as part of a restructuring of the agency’s biotechnology regulatory functions in June 2002.•
