With the exception of one importer position filled for a 1-year term due to a resignation, all members will serve 3-year terms beginning Feb. 1, 1997. The board is composed of 111 members representing 36 states, 4 units and importers. The Secretary of Agriculture selects appointees from cattle producers and importers nominated by organizations representing beef, dairy, veal and importer interests. Reappointed members representing cattle producers, by state and unit are: Arkansas--Ned R. Purtle; California--William J. Brandenberg;Florida-- Gertrude E. Carey; Idaho--Robert J. Lanting; Illinois--Roger M. Houston; Kansas--Lyle H. Gray; Kentucky--Gilbert R. Tucker Sr. and Joseph L. Burke Jr.; Minnesota--David H. Wiebke; Missouri--William R. Palmer; Nebraska--Paul F. Grabouski and Larry D. Hudkins; New York--Elaine Louise P. Swiler; North Dakota--Rodney R. Nelson; Oklahoma--Joe B. Drake and Frederick F. Drummond; Texas--Neil A. Hoff and William T. Blackburn, William A. Joyce and Andrew Ralph. Appointed for a 1-year term is James M. Peters. Established under the Beef Promotion and Research Act of 1985, the board conducts a national program designed to improve the beef industry's position in the marketplace. The program is funded by a mandatory $1-per-head assessment on all cattle marketed in the United States, and by an equivalent assessment on imported cattle and beef. Assessments began Oct. 1, 1986. Members of the initial board were appointed to 1-, 2- and 3-year terms in 1986. Each year, approximately one-third of the positions are filled for 3-year terms.
