Resolution of Trade Issues with South Africa Release No. 0052.97 Tom Amontree (202) 720-4623 Statement by Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman on Resolution of Trade Issues with South Africa February 18, 1997 "I am pleased to announce that as a result of intense negotiations with South African agriculture minister Derek Hanekom, South Africa has agreed to accept wheat from Karnal bunt quarantine areas that has twice tested negative for the fungus. This is a significant breakthrough because of South Africa's growing economy and its value as a lucrative, long-term customer. USDA estimates that this agreement is worth about $34 million to U.S. wheat farmers. "In addition, South Africa has agreed to allow imports of U.S. pork to continue unimpeded while it reviews certain freezing requirements. "My meetings with Mr. Hanekom were very productive. I believe we continue to build on a solid working relationship that will expand trade and have a positive economic impact for both countries." # NOTE: USDA news releases and media advisories are available on the Internet.
