ADMINISTRATION TO HELP DC AREA STUDENTS Release No. 0085.97 Media Advisory Tom Amontree (202) 720-4623 Joel Berg (202) 720-5746 ADMINISTRATION TO HELP DC AREA STUDENTS MEET COMMUNITY SERVICE GRADUATION REQUIREMENT AND INCREASE FOOD RECOVERY WASHINGTON, March 18, 1997--Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman will announce Thursday, March 20, a Clinton Administration initiative to provide opportunities for high school students in the District of Columbia and suburban Maryland to meet their community service graduation requirements. The announcement will take place at 3:30 pm at the Capital Area Community Food Bank at 645 Taylor Street, NE, D.C. The Food Bank is a community-based agency involved in food recovery and gleaning efforts that will benefit from [and utilize] an increased number of student volunteers as a result of this initiative. Glickman will also announce that the cafeterias of several other federal agencies will follow an Executive Order from the President and join the Department of Agriculture cafeteria in regularly donating excess food to the DC Central Kitchen. Also attending the announcement will be dozens of high school student volunteers and officials from Montgomery County, Prince Georges County, and the District of Columbia. After the announcement, participants will help sort thousands of pounds of recovered food that is distributed through the Food Bank. Directions to the Capital Area Community Food Bank: From North Capital Street traveling Northbound --- Turn right on Michigan Avenue. Follow Michigan Avenue around Catholic University over the Michigan Avenue Bridge. Turn left onto 10th street. Turn left at Taylor Street.
