Ford (202) 720-8998 aford@usda.gov Connie Crunkleton (202) 720-8998 ccrunkleton@usda.gov GLICKMAN APPOINTS FIVE TO THE NATIONAL PORK BOARD WASHINGTON, July 11, 1997--Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman today announced two reappointments and three new appointments to the 15-member National Pork Board. Appointees will serve 3-year terms. The five were chosen from among eight pork producers nominated by the National Pork Producers Delegate Body during its March meeting in Atlanta, Ga. Reappointed are: James L. Ledger, Washington, Iowa; and Sharon J. Schwartz, Washington, Kan.; Newly appointed are: Chet McManus, Fulton, S.D.; James C. Pollock, Kinston, N.C.; and Marlin P. Pankratz, Mountain Lake, Minn. Established under the Pork Promotion, Research and Consumer Information Act of 1985, the board has developed budgets and awarded contracts to carry out a coordinated program designed to strengthen the position of pork in the marketplace. The program is funded by a mandatory assessment of 0.45 percent of the market value of all hogs sold in the United States and an equivalent amount on imported hogs, pork and pork products. Assessments began Nov. 1, 1986. One-third of the board's members are appointed each year.
