Resolution of Issues on Biotechnology With Egypt Release No. 0281.97 Tom Amontree (202) 720-4623 tamontree@usda.gov STATEMENT by Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman on the Resolution of Issues on Biotechnology With Egypt August 20, 1997 "I am pleased to announce that as a result of negotiations with the Egyptian Ministries of Health and Agriculture, we have resolved concerns created by Egyptian Decree 242 regarding products derived from biotechnology. As a result, among other provisions, Egypt has agreed that imported products not containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or containing GMOs approved for commercial marketing in the country of origin, do not have to be certified. "The Implementing Memorandum for Decree 242 provides the means to protect Egyptian consumers' welfare without jeopardizing the flow of agricultural commodities to Egypt. The decisions made by the government of Egypt reflect careful consideration of food safety for Egyptians and were also based on sound science. The United States and Egypt have a long history of cooperation and mutual support. The quick resolution of this issue is yet another example of our continuing partnership. America's farmers look on Egypt as one of the most important markets for U.S. agricultural products, particularly wheat, coarse grains, and soybeans. "I would like to thank the Egyptian Ministries of Health and Agriculture for their quick resolution of their concerns and I would also like to acknowledge the assistance provided by Ahmed Maher El Sayed, Egyptian Ambassador to the United States, with whom I met on August 7." # NOTE: USDA news releases and media advisories are available on the Internet.
