GLICKMAN TO PROVIDE DETAILS OF LEGISLATION DEALING WITH MEAT RECALLS AND   
OTHER CONSUMER PROTECTION MEASURES

     Washington, D.C., August 28, 1997--Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman
will hold a news conference Friday morning to provide details of legislation
he intends to send to Congress that will help better protect consumers from
foodborne illnesses by enhancing USDA's food safety enforcement powers.

     Glickman indicated last week during a news conference about the
investigation into E. coli contamination of hamburger patties from Hudson
Foods that he would have this legislation ready for Congress when it returned
from its August recess.

     The news conference will be held Friday, August 29 at 10 a.m. in room
107-A of the Jamie L. Whitten Building, 14th and Independence SW, Washington,
D.C.
