USDA COMMITTEE OF SCIENTISTS HOLDS MEETINGS ON LAND MANAGEMENT
WASHINGTON, Jan. 7, 1998--The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Committee of Scientists has scheduled three public meetings in January and February. The Committee is charged with evaluating the land management planning process and making recommendations to the secretary of agriculture and the chief of USDA's Forest Service for new forest planning regulations.
The next meeting will be January 22-23 at the Hyatt Regency
Hotel, 1750 Welton Street, Denver, Colo. The Committee will meet on January 22 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on January 23 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
At this meeting the Committee will discuss planning issues in the Forest Service's Rocky Mountain Region (Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and eastern Wyoming),review the National Forest Management Act and its history, and discuss the scientific principles underlying land and resource management planning.
The public may offer comments about improving land and resource planning for the national forests on January 22, beginning at 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Individuals wanting to speak must register at the meeting and limit their comments to five minutes. Written comments may be submitted before or after the meeting to the Committee of Scientists, Mail Stop 1104, Forest Service, USDA, P.O. Box 96090, Washington, DC 20090-6090.
Other meetings are scheduled for February 12-13 in Seattle,
Wash., and February 24-25 in Atlanta, Ga. More information about these meetings will be forthcoming. All meetings are open to the public.
