AGRICULTURE SECRETARY TO SPEAK AT MEMORIAL SERVICE Media Advisory Release No. 0017.98 Tom Amontree, 202-720-4623 tom.amontree@usda.gov AGRICULTURE SECRETARY TO SPEAK AT MEMORIAL SERVICE Washington, DC, Jan. 15, 1998 -- Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman will speak at the fifth anniversary memorial service, sponsored by Safe Tables Our Priority (S.T.O.P.) on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 4:00 p.m. The memorial service will commemorate the 1993 E.coli 0157:H7 outbreak and the four children who died. Included in his remarks, Secretary Glickman will discuss the departments new food safety program that is being implemented in meat and poultry plants nationwide beginning Jan. 26, 1998. Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) requires meat and poultry inspections to be based on science, including testing for microbial pathogens. HACCP replaces the "poke and sniff" system used for the last 90 years.
