155 EXPERTS APPOINTED TO TRADE ADVISORY COMMITTEES Release No. 0118.98 Tom Amontree (202) 720-4623 tamontree@usda.gov Carolyn Harris (202) 690-1851 HarrisC@fas.usda.gov 155 EXPERTS APPOINTED TO TRADE ADVISORY COMMITTEES WASHINGTON, March 16, 1998--Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman and U.S. Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky today appointed 155 agricultural experts to six advisory committees: the Agricultural Policy Advisory Committee for Trade (APAC) and five Agricultural Technical Advisory Committees for Trade (ATACs). "We are pleased to have strong leadership and the breadth of technical expertise from the U.S. agricultural sector to advise us on U.S. farm trade policy," said Glickman. "The caliber of the people who have agreed to help the Office of the Trade Representative and the Department of Agriculture as we prepare to negotiate the next round of multilateral agricultural trade negotiations in the World Trade Organization is impressive," said Barshefsky. The advisory committees were established in 1974 when Congress established a private sector advisory committee system to ensure that U.S. trade policy and trade negotiation objectives adequately reflected U.S. commercial and economic interests. The committees provide the Secretary and the Trade Representative information and advice on negotiating objectives, bargaining positions, and other matters related to the development, implementation, and administration of U.S. agricultural trade policy. The APAC gives advice on overall trade policy objectives regarding agricultural trade issues. The ATACS provide detailed technical advice and information on specific commodities. The five technical advisory committees are: ATAC for Trade in Animals and Animal Products ATAC for Trade in Fruits and Vegetables ATAC for Trade in Grains, Feed, and Oilseeds ATAC for Trade in Tobacco, Cotton, and Peanuts ATAC for Trade in Sweeteners Members of the APAC and ATACs are appointed to the advisory committees jointly by the Secretary of Agriculture and the U.S. Trade Representative. ATAC members must have commodity expertise and a knowledge of the effects that various trade barriers or lack of barriers can have on the commodities they represent. All members are recognized as leaders in their field. The committees meet on average three times a year, but meetings may be called more often. Committee members serve at their own expense.
