Release No. 0276.98 Wayne Baggett (202) 720-2032 w.baggett@usda.gov Glickman Announces Continuous CRP Enrollment Figures WASHINGTON, July 13, 1998--Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman said today that 618,888 acres of land dedicated to buffer practices have been enrolled into 10- to 15-year contracts under the Conservation Reserve Program's (CRP) continuous sign-up. "These practices provide both on and off-farm environmental benefits," Glickman said. "Conservation buffers are among the most valuable conservation practices, and I am pleased with the response we've had from farmers." Land enrolled under the CRP continuous sign-up is a key component of USDA's Conservation Buffer Initiative, which promotes the voluntary enrollment of 2 million miles of buffers along the nation's streams, rivers, and tributaries. As part of the initiative, USDA's Farm Service Agency (FSA), in cooperation with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), state forestry agencies and conservation districts, works with farmers to install buffer practices to enhance water quality and wildlife habitat and reduce erosion on certain cropland and marginal pastureland. Participants receive technical and cost-share assistance to start the practices, and annual rental payments under the 10- to 15-year contract. "By allowing farmers to immediately enroll buffers and other highly desirable environmental practices into CRP contracts at any time during the year, USDA is successfully promoting voluntary conservation," Glickman said. Under the continuous sign-up, all eligible farmers may enter at any time into CRP contracts for windbreaks, grass waterways, shelter belts, filter strips, riparian buffers, and certain other highly desirable conservation practices. "I strongly encourage all farmers to visit their USDA Service Center to learn which continuous sign-up practices are suitable for their land," said Glickman.
