Meeting with Governors and Members of Congress from Northern Plains States Release No. 0395.98 Statement by Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman on Meeting with Governors and Members of Congress from Northern Plains States September 28, 1998 "On Tuesday I will be meeting with governors, Senators, and Members of Congress from several Northern Plains States. I look forward to what I am sure will be a frank and open discussion of the issues facing farmers and ranchers in those states. Like producers all over the country, they are suffering from global economic conditions that are depressing prices, exports, and farm income. The triple threat of Asia's economic problems, record production, and the strong U.S. dollar are creating financial problems similar to those faced by our producers in the 1980s. That is why the Clinton Administration has proposed a $7.3 billion relief package to help our farmers weather this crisis. "I understand the concerns that have prompted these governors to take action against agricultural imports. Their acts reflect deep and understandable frustrations on the part of U.S. producers. Like any trading relationship, our partnership with Canada is not without problems. "I am very concerned about this situation. I hope that the governors will provide me with information as to precisely what is occurring. Hopefully, our meeting tomorrow will help clarify these issues so that we can identify specific concerns and work together in dealing with Canadian officials to resolve them." #
