      The President's New Bioenergy/Bioproducts Initiative
                        January 13, 2000



     "I am extremely pleased with the President's new proposal to promote
increased production of biobased fuels, including ethanol.  This summer, the
President joined me and other members of the Cabinet here at USDA for a
conference on biobased products and bioenergy, where he signed an executive
order to promote further use of these products.  Today's announcement builds
on that commitment in a very significant way.  

     "During these difficult times in American agriculture, farmers need all
the new market opportunities they can get.  This kind of diversification will
not only help protect our environment, it will also strengthen the farm and
rural economy."
