Thousandsofpeoplemaketheirlivingfromit,andmanymoreuseitforrecreation.However,inrecentyears,thebaysfishandwildlifehavebeendamagedbycontaminants.Thisjointeffortwillmeancleanerwater,_improvedhabitat_Ԁforthreatenedandendangeredspecies,andeventuallybetteryieldsfromthebaysfisheries.  TheVirginiaChesapeakeBayConservationReserveEnhancementProgram(_CREP_)willtarget25,000acresinthebaywatershed,andtheVirginiaSouthernRivers_CREP_Ԁwillimprove10,000acresinnonbaydrainagebasins.TheprogramsweredevelopedtohelpprotecttheChesapeakeBayandothercoastalestuariesfromtheeffectsofexcessivenutrientsandsedimentsresultingfromagriculturalrunoff.  Thetotalcostoftheprogramisexpectedtoreach$91millionover15years.Ofthatamount,$68millionwillcomefromthefederalgovernmentand$23millionfromVirginia.Virginiawillalsospendupto$3.75milliontobuy8,000acresofvoluntarypermanentconservationeasements"6,000acresinthebayprojectand2,000acresintheSouthernRivers ! # project.
