GLICKMAN TO DISCUSS ASIAN LONG-HORNED BEETLE DEVASTATION IN NEW YORK CITY

     WASHINGTON, March 17, 2000 -- Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman will
launch a national tour on Tuesday, March 21 in New York City to highlight the
growing threat posed to American agriculture and our environment by invasive
pests and diseases.  

     In Ruppert Park, Glickman will be briefed on efforts to fight the
voracious Asian longhorned beetle and the deadly West Nile virus in the New
York area.  He will examine the impact of the beetle on trees in the park and
he will discuss additional options for eradication and prevention efforts with
state and local officials.  A brief press availability will follow.
