GLICKMAN TO GIVE BIOTECHNOLOGY SPEECH TO NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES PANEL

     WASHINGTON, May 3, 2000 -- Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman will
address the National Academy of Sciences' Standing Committee on Biotechnology,
Food and Fiber Production and the Environment at 12:30 p.m. EDT on Thursday,
May 4, 2000.  The panel, created at the Secretary's request, is undertaking an
independent, on-going, scientific review of USDA's regulatory process for
biotechnology-derived plants.  The Secretary will discuss the new Clinton
Administration biotechnology initiatives announced today.
