Hearing Solutions
Shelita Smith, USDA TARGET Center
Here at the TARGET Center, we have various assistive technologies that help people that are
deaf or hard of hearing. At the hearing station, we have a TTY software program,
which stands for tele-typewriter, which is a telephone that is used for deaf people.
As opposed to having a TTY that sits on top of the workstation, this TTY is used via the modem. There are also stand-alone TTY units that consist of little machines that
are used with an alphanumeric pad on it. We also have another TTY. This consists of a telephone and a TTY all in one. So this allows a person that is deaf, hard-of-hearing, or hearing to use this telephone.
We also have ALDs in the TARGET Center. ALD stands for assistive listening devices.
The assistive listening devices are used for settings where sound needs to be amplified.
Here at the USDA TARGET Center, we are committed to helping employees who are deaf and
hard-of-hearing through the usage of assistive technologies.
