Mobility Workstation
Michelle McGrath, USDA TARGET Center
Here we have the mobility station, and it includes hardware and software solutions for people with mobility impairments possibly caused by paraplegia or quadriplegia, multiple sclerosis, Lou Gehrig's disease, or other diseases or impairments that affect fine motor and
gross motor skills.
One of the most popular options for people with mobility impairments
is voice recognition software, and that allows people to access the computer almost
entirely by using their voice rather than using their hands and a keyboard and mouse.
An on-screen keyboard allows somebody with mobility impairments to access the computer in a
different way. Different keyboard layouts appear on the screen, and someone can use a mouse
or an alternative input device with that on-screen keyboard to allow them equal access
to the computer.
For some people, they prefer different hardware solutions, and we have a couple samples of different keyboards that take the keys and condense them and put them in a different order
that makes it easier for somebody, for example, that uses one hand to navigate a keyboard.
We also have an alternative mouse here that makes it easier for somebody with gross
motor impairments.
There's virtually no job that a person with a disability can't do with
the right tools.
