Background

The USDA ARRA Projects Map allows the American Public to find and view information about individual Recovery Act projects using a web-based map display. The map was created by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to increase transparency and accountability of federal spending by providing the public with additional methods of accessing project information.

Project Data

Data for the map is obtained from USAspending.gov. The data retrieved includes ARRA funded projects from multiple fiscal years.

The map application displays obligations of ARRA funding in the form of Assistance (grants and loans) and Contracts (Awards). The map does not display commitments, disbursements, performance indicators or administrative costs at this time.

Project markers on the map represent the primary place of performance for funding obligations and are placed by zip code. County and state summaries include total number of projects and obligated funding for each respective county or state according to the availability of each record’s place of performance data. County locations are determined by a record’s place of performance zip code.

The application is designed to represent all funding in a consistent and accurate manner according to the location data available. For this reason the application does not display project markers or include records in state summaries where the record does not have a valid place of performance zip code. It will, however, mention the total funding and number of projects not displayed on the map.

The map viewer is designed to work in all major web browsers which support full Google Maps functionality. Performance is optimal on those browsers and computer systems which are able to perform javascript operations quickly (i.e. Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Apple Safari). If JavaScript is turned off, the map viewer will not be available; however, all map data can be viewed in the accompanying Map Data page.
