Earth Day

EARTH DAY : More than 60 communities celebrated Earth Day 2002 by highlighting water and wastewater projects totaling $148 million. Check presentations, ribbon cuttings, tree plantings, and performances from school groups were the order of the day.

RUS Administrator Hilda Gay Legg and Assistant Administrator (WEP) Gary Morgan were on hand to award WEP Loans and Grants to communities in North Carolina and Tennessee on Monday, April 22. Administrator Legg made two presentations in Tennessee, first in Centerville and later in Selmer. Tennessee made announcements of loans and grants totaling more than $10 million to celebrate Earth Day. In the morning Legg and State Director Ruth Tackett presented a check for $2.8 million to Centerville Mayor Ralph Loveless and other city officials. She then joined local FFA members in a tree planting ceremony.

Later in the day, Legg and Tackett made a presentation of $4,193,000 to Selmer Mayor Jimmy Whittington and other city and county officials. Third graders from Selmer Elementary made a musical presentation, singing about the importance of recycling and protecting our home. Legg joined officials and representatives from the third grade class to plant 3 trees in a Selmer city park after the formal check presentation.

Assistant Administrator Gary Morgan and State Director John Cooper were on hand for the presentation of $5,521,000 in loans and grants to Warren County officials in Warrenton, North Carolina. Congresswoman Eva Clayton, a field representative for Sen. Jesse Helms, local media, Rural Development staff and other government officials attended the ceremony.
