Fund for Rural America Grants in Nebraska

1997 Grant Award:

Educational Service Unit No. 5

$330,000
Beatrice, Nebraska

Educational Service Unit No. 5 submitted a grant application on behalf of the Southeast Nebraska Distance Learning Consortium, which consists of nine K-12 school districts two community colleges, and two regional school service agencies serving a total of 61,270 students. The proposed distance learning network will promote interaction among the students in the various remote locations and with the instructor by utilizing a full size video display of the students without timing delays. The RUS grant funds will be used to support the purchase of equipment for 13 classrooms. This distance learning network will enable schools to offer classes, in conjunction with other schools, in subject areas where low enrollments prohibit the hiring of a teacher for that purpose and to enable the schools to offer advanced classes in such subject areas as science, math, and foreign languages.
