1. Scope

1.1 The criteria covers the minimum requirements for precast concrete
manholes. All ASTM, ACI and AWS Specifications referred to shall be the latest issue unless otherwise specified.


2. General

2.1 Precast Concrete Manholes shall be constructed in accordance with ASTM C 858-78.

2.2 Precast concrete collars are acceptable for use with manholes
provided design criteria is acceptable to RUS.

3. Materials

3.1 Cement - Portland cement shall be types, I, IA, III or IIIA
conforming to ASTM C 150. Air entrained admixtures, if used, shall conform to ASTM C 260.

3.2 Aggregates - Aggregates shall conform to ASTM C 33. Coarse
aggregates shall be graded from ¾ inch to No. 4. Lightweight
aggregates are not permitted.

3.3 Reinforcing Steel

3.3.1 Bar reinforcing shall conform to ASTM A 615. Grade 40 or 60 new
billet steel. Welded wire fabric shall conform to ASTM A 185.

3.3.2 Bars with kinks or bends not indicated in drawings shall not be
permitted. Heating to bend bars will not be permitted.

3.3.3 All reinforcing steel shall be cut and formed to the dimensional tolerances specified in ACI 318.

3.3.4 All reinforcing steel shall be clean and free of loose rust, scale, oil
and other matter which may destroy or reduce the bend.

3.4 Gaskets - Gaskets shall be a resilient material resistant to attack by
acids and alkali conditions in soils and shall form a continuous seal.

4. Manufacturer

4.1 Concrete - All concrete shall conform to ASTM C 94.

4.2 Hardware - All hardware items, such as concrete inserts, cable rack
supports, cable racks, pulling-in-irons, frames and covers, and other associated hardware items shall be considered as part of the manhole and supplied by the manufacturer unless otherwise specified by the borrower.

5. Design Requirements

5.1 Highway loading shall be HS20-44 as prescribed by the American
Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).

5.2 Concrete Strength - The minimum acceptable compression
strength for the concrete is 4500 psi, determined in accordance with ASTM C 39. For concrete Types I or IA tests shall be preformed at 28 days; for types III or IIIA tests shall be preformed at seven days.

6. Submission

6.1 A submission for listing of this product shall include:

A. A list of sizes and catalog numbers.
B. A specification sheet.
C. Drawings of each size manhole and collar.
D. List of standard and optional hardware, including picture, manufacturer, material and appropriate specification (if applicable).
E. A certified statement indicating compliance with the HS 20-44 requirement.

7. Markings

7.1 All manholes shipped to a RUS project shall have identification marking affixed to the manhole showing the RUS listing designation.
