Clean Watershed Needs Survey (C W N S)

The 2000 C W N S was completed August 20, 2003, and released as a report to Congress.  The survey information for the U.S. and individual States is available at: http://www.epa.gov/owmitnet Clean Watershed Needs Survey. 

E P A conducted its previous Clean Water Needs Survey in 1996. The survey estimates needs of those publicly owned, municipal wastewater collection and treatment facilities, including planning, design, and construction costs. The total clean water needs for facilities nationwide were estimated at $139.5 billion.

  • Total number of wastewater treatment facilities nationwide: 16,024
  • Most facilities: TX, 1311
  • Most combined sewer facilities: IN, 119
  • Highest small community needs: OH, $1.5 billion
  • Highest nonpoint source program needs: WI, $691 million
  • Highest stormwater program needs: CA, $1.2 billion
