USDA PROVIDES $333.7 MILLION TO IMPROVE ELECTRIC AND TELECOMMUNICATION SERVICES IN 15 STATES
Funds Will Help Maintain And Improve Local Electric And Telecommunication Systems
WASHINGTON., August 14 , 2003—Agriculture Under Secretary Thomas C. Dorr today announced the awarding of $333.7 million in loans
and loan guarantees to 15 states. These funds will be used to make needed improvements to local electric and telecommunication systems and will help spur the economic recovery in rural America.
“The Bush Administration is working hard to boost America’s rural economy,” Dorr said. “This investment in rural electric and telecommunication infrastructure creates job opportunities and provides
services that improve the quality of life for local residents.”
According to USDA statistics, 23 jobs are created for every $1 million of Federal investment in electric infrastructure. The loans being awarded today could help create 7,675 jobs in rural areas across these 15 states.
“The funds will be used to serve 50,906 new customers, build 3,650 miles of new
distribution lines and cable and make other improvements to existing electric and telephone systems,” Dorr said.
The following is a complete list of approved project dollars by state. A description of each funding recipient can be found at the USDA Rural Development web site at:
