JOHANNS PRESENTS $7.1 MILLION IN FUNDING TO NEW MEXICO COMMUNITIES
Five Colonias Communities Receive Support For Water System Improvements
LAS CRUCES, N.M., Aug. 26, 2005- Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns presented a $7.1 million check today to representatives of five Southern New Mexico Colonias communities to be used to provide for water and wastewater system improvements. The funds are being provided through USDA Rural Development's Rural Utilities Program and will be divided among the five communities.
"These projects will provide modern water delivery systems and meet a growing demand for services," said Johanns. "Each of these investments will provide jobs and enhance the quality of life in these historically underserved rural communities." Johanns made the presentation while in Las Cruces to host a Farm Bill Forum at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum.
Communities in New Mexico slated to receive the funds include Anthony, Bayard, Chaparral, Columbus, and Lordsburg. USDA Rural Development has invested more than $54 billion since the beginning of the Bush Administration to increase homeownership opportunities, promote business development, and improve community and technology infrastructure. As a result, more than one million jobs have been created or saved.
