Administrator for the National Agricultural Statistics Service
Since joining the National Agricultural Statistics Service in 1997, Joe Reilly has served as Deputy Administrator for Field Operations, Associate Administrator since 2005 and most recently as Administrator. As head of field operations, he was responsible for the operation of the 46 NASS field offices, which covered all 50 states and Puerto Rico. As Associate Administrator, Reilly was second in command under two Administrators and oversaw the day-to-day operations of the agency. On May 4, 2014 he became Administrator.
Prior to his tenure at NASS, Reilly was employed with the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of the Census for more than 21 years. While there, he worked on crime, housing, economics and labor statistics before joining the Census of Agriculture team. Reilly received the Commerce Department's highest award in 1997 for his outstanding management of the Census of Agriculture program. He moved to the Department of Agriculture when responsibilities for the Census of Agriculture were transferred to NASS later that year.
'It has always been my goal to contribute as much as possible to ensure that NASS remains the leader in agricultural statistics,' said Reilly. "As NASS' Administrator I continue to work with an outstanding staff across the country to ensure that we use the most effective and efficient ways to provide timely, accurate, and useful statistics in service to U.S. agriculture, which is our mission."
Reilly grew up on a small farm near Tamaqua, Pennsylvania. He is a 1975 graduate of the Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor's of Science degree in statistics and marketing.
