Dr. Charles Onwulata is Director of the Office of the Chief Scientist for the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Research, Education, and Economics mission area. Dr. Onwulata assists the Under Secretary for Research, Education, and Economics (REE)/Chief Scientist in supervising program planning and execution by REE Staff to: strengthen science and science leadership, improve national coordination, and enhance outreach and awareness.
Before this appointment, Dr. Onwulata was a Lead Scientist and Food Technologist for the Dairy Research at the USDA, ARS, Eastern Regional Research Center, Wyndmoor, PA. Dr. Onwulata also served as the Coordinator of the Center of Excellence in Extrusion and Polymer Rheology. Dr. Onwulata has worked in several executive leadership capacities including Associate Area Director, USDA, ARS, North Atlantic Area, National Program Leader, USDA, ARS, and Special Assistant to the Director, Forest Service, Northeastern Regional Station.
Dr. Onwulata is a Fellow of the Institute of Food Technologists. He was awarded the ARS North Atlantic Area Early Career Scientist of the Year, and the Secretary's Honor Award for developing protein-enriched snack products. He is the recipient of number of other prestigious awards including USDA-ARS Technology Transfer Award, Federal Laboratory Consortium Technology Transfer Awards, and Gold Medals for scientific accomplishments from the Philadelphia Federal Executive Board.
Dr. Onwulata received his Ph.D. (1991) in Food Science and Agricultural Engineering from University of Missouri-Columbia. He earned his M.S. in Food Science (1986) and B.S. (1984) in Animal Science from Alabama A & M University.
