First Lady Michelle Obama Gives Gift of a Magnolia Tree to USDA
First Lady, Michelle Obama presented USDA with a seedling from the Jackson magnolia tree when she visited the Agriculture Department on February 19, 2009. The Jackson magnolia tree was planted by President Andrew Jackson on the south portico of the White House in memory of his wife, Rachel, 180 years ago. The tree is now being cared for in a green house at the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. The tree will not be mature enough for transplanting out of doors for approximately three years.
