Nine Decades of Powering Rural America

Date:
Tue, 05/19/2026 - 12:00

Radio Broadcast Num: 01

Radio Remark: The arrival of the Rural Electrification Act could not have come at a more needed time in rural America history - the midst of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. Yet this legislation not only turned the lights and power on in rural towns and counties, through the agency created by this Act - what is now USDA's Rural Utilities Service - opportunities to expand rural infrastructure and economic opportunity in those areas. Rod Bain looks at ninety years of the Rural Electrification Act in this edition of "Agriculture USA".

PARTICIPANTS: Rod Bain. Rural Utilities Service Administrator Karl Elmshaeusen and Assistant Administrator Christopher McLean
